Euroclear strengthens net zero strategy with high-integrity carbon removals

Brussels, 29 September 2026 – Supporting European and UK projects which combine durable carbon removal with benefits for farmers, landowners and local communities.

Euroclear is expanding its use of carbon removals as part of its strategy to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2050. Reducing emissions remains the company’s priority. However, Euroclear is also now supporting projects that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in soils, forests and durable materials.

Working with carbon removal specialist CUR8, Euroclear has selected a diversified set of projects across Europe and the UK that combine environmental integrity with meaningful social benefits. CUR8 supports Euroclear in selecting and monitoring projects against high standards of quality and integrity.

In 2026, Euroclear is expected to remove more than 3,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Paul Symons, Chief Sustainability Officer at Euroclear, said: "Our net zero strategy is focused on delivering real and lasting climate impact. By investing in high-quality carbon removal projects that also create meaningful social benefits, we can help remove carbon from the atmosphere while supporting livelihoods, strengthening communities and protecting the natural systems on which we all depend. Climate action is most powerful when it delivers positive outcomes for both people and the planet."

Selected carbon removal projects

The projects chosen combine nature-based and technological approaches within the rapidly developing carbon removal market.

  • Ecobase – Project Spruce, Europe: Supports the reforestation of degraded and low-value agricultural land using native, mixed-species forests. Over 220 participating landowners in 24 coutnries establish and manage the forests and receive the majority of the project’s carbon-related revenues.
  • Agreena, Europe: Helps European farmers adopt regenerative agricultural practices that increase carbon storage in soils while improving soil health and resilience to drought. Most carbon-related revenues flow directly to participating farmers.
  • O.C.O Technology, UK: Captures carbon dioxide generated from the treatment of industrial waste by using their Advanced Carbonation Technology to permanently store it within a sustainable aggregate for use in construction materials such as building blocks, ready-mix concrete and road sub-bases. The carbon can remain locked away for more than 1,000 years, making this one of the most durable forms of carbon removal available today.

Euroclear has purchased the carbon removal credits associated with these projects and is retiring them as they are issued, ensuring that they cannot be resold or claimed by another organisation.
